But I’m a Cheerleader directed by Jamie Babbit

This dreamlike, puffy pink 1999 film has a star-studded cast and is a great introduction to camp aesthetics. Megan Bloomfield is a high school cheerleader and the stereotypical all-American girl. When her parents send her to a conversion camp to “cure” her suspected lesbianism, Megan is shocked -- how could they believe she’s gay? She’s a CHEERLEADER! However, Megan’s experience at the camp will surprise and challenge her in unexpected ways, expanding her understanding of herself and what it means to be queer. A sharp satire and gorgeous color study, this movie is a campy journey from start to finish!

Pink Flamingos directed by John Waters

As the movie poster expresses/warns, this movie is truly an exercise in poor taste. John Waters is an iconic cult director and camp connoisseur, consistently pushing the boundaries of filmmaking. Pink Flamingos stars drag queen Divine, who served as a muse for Waters for much of his career. Divine searchs to maintain her position as the “filthiest person alive”, facing off with other criminals and being absolutely horrid the entire time. This movie is brutal to watch, but truly exemplifies the importance of trsah, and gives a great historical basis for understanding cult and camp.

Jennifer’s Body directed by Karyn Kusama

Jennifer’s Body is an amazing example of cult cinema because it was a film largely misunderstood in it’s time, but experienced a surge in popularity and new understanding years later. Jennifer Check is the hottest girl in school known for absolutely slaying the boys, and this only becomes more true as she is demonically possessed and embarks on a murderous and cannibalistic serial rampage. Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried stun as leads, exploring the complexities of female friendship in this riot of a movie.
